Natural rights theorists might argue that the right to privacy is a basic human right. Consequentialists might argue that without a right to privacy, there is a chilling effect on our activities - we might fear negative consequences if our intellectual activities were disclosed, and therefore restrict our own activities, depriving ourselves, potentially, of important information.
