On this site I will list a code of ethics applicable to a typical public library, with links to ethical justifications for the items in the code. (Click on each code item to link to the ethical justifications page.)
Public library code of ethics (based in part on the American Library Association Code of Ethics) 1. The library will pride itself on equitable access for all segments of the population (age, race, socioeconomic status, etc.) and treat all patrons without bias. 2. The library will promote intellectual freedom and resist efforts at censorship, regardless of whether the target is adult or children's materials. 3. The library will protect patrons' right to privacy, e.g., safeguarding circulation records except in the event of a subpoena. 4. The library will respect intellectual property rights, i.e., copyright laws. 5. Library employees will make a distinction between their personal beliefs and professional duties; the former will not influence the latter. 6. The library will promote a respectful and fair environment for its employees, and encourage professional development for its employees. 7. The library considers access to information to be a welfare right, rather than a liberty right (in other words, the library has a duty to actively provide information). 8. The library will keep all fees, fines, etc. at the lowest possible level (i.e., the minimum necessary to keep the library operating). 9. Library staff will report all violations of law on library premises to the appropriate law enforcement officials (patrons wave their right to privacy if they engage in criminal acts).
